What is flagstone?

Flagstone is thin, flat stone split or cut from sedimentary rock quarries, used primarily for patios, walkways, and outdoor paving surfaces.

Flagstone is a flat, thin stone cut or naturally split from sedimentary rock formations and laid as paving material for outdoor spaces. The stone's natural fissility (tendency to break along layers) makes it well suited for creating uniform pavers without heavy shaping. In the Austin area, flagstone comes primarily from Texas limestone and sandstone deposits found throughout the Hill Country and surrounding regions.

Local varieties include:

  • Limestone flagstone, sourced from Hill Country quarries, ranges in color from cream to gray to rust tones and weathers into a naturally textured surface.
  • Sandstone flagstone, often imported but compatible with local landscapes, offers warmer tan and reddish hues and slightly softer finish.

Flagstone is valued for patios, walkways, pool decks, and garden paths because it offers a finished, permanent surface with natural aesthetics. Unlike poured concrete or uniform pavers, flagstone retains the character of natural rock while providing stable footing. Its porosity requires sealing in freeze-thaw climates, but Austin's mild winters reduce that concern. The material is durable when properly installed with compacted base and mortar or sand joints.

Landscapes across Austin rely on flagstone for high-traffic areas where durability and visual appeal matter equally. Professional hardscape and masonry installers handle layout, cutting, and finishing to achieve level surfaces and proper drainage.
