What is Zoysia grass?

Zoysia is a warm-season grass species with fine texture and dense growth that thrives in heat and tolerates drought and foot traffic well.

Zoysia grass is a warm-season turfgrass native to Asia that grows dense, fine-textured blades forming a thick carpet-like lawn. It spreads laterally through rhizomes and stolons (underground and above-ground runners), creating a tightly woven turf that crowds out weeds and resists compaction from foot traffic.

In Austin's climate, zoysia performs well because it thrives in heat and full sun, requires less frequent watering than traditional cool-season grasses, and bounces back quickly after drought. The grass enters dormancy in winter, turning tan or brown, then greens up as temperatures warm in spring. It typically takes longer to establish from seed than some alternatives, so many Austin landscapers install it as sod for faster coverage.

Zoysia tolerates the intense Texas sun without burning and handles periodic dry spells better than fescue or Kentucky bluegrass. However, it does require occasional maintenance including dethatching (removing dead organic matter), aeration, and proper mowing height to maintain its dense appearance. The grass also transitions more slowly in spring than faster-greening varieties, which matters if early-season green color is a priority.

Local lawn care providers often recommend zoysia for homeowners seeking a low-water alternative that holds up under Texas heat while providing a fine, attractive finish. Its durability makes it popular for both residential and commercial properties across the Austin area.
